There are still some good hatches taking place. Stream levels are a little higher than desirable but can still be fished successfully. 04/28/22 The stream is up to near a normal level and in good shape. I do best here in the late evening after Ive had a few beers at the local oskar blues restaraunt and pub! The creek is full of opportunistic fish that are eager to take a dry fly, so take advantage of the great caddis, blue wing olive and terrestrial fishing.

There are mostly brown and rainbow trout in the lower sections but the higher elevations hold plenty of brook trout and cutthroat trout. Short, accurate casts are called for most times. The water is cold but there are good midge hatches and you can catch trout. For anglers that want a short drive and fast fishing, one of the best possible locations not even an hours drive from Denver is St. Vrain Creek. I wasnt going to use a fishing vest or hip pack to carry the stuff. Summer dry fly fishing is not far away, but for now, dry/dropper or nymph rigs are the order of the day. The water was running at what I figured was an average volume for this time of year, although on the ride up to the river, John said its hard to characterize what normal is after the floods, toxic spills and years of drought. This is such terrible news because the St. Vrain has just recently started to come back to life after the terrible floods a few years back.

There is a trailhead at Wild Basin that goes into the high country of the Rocky Mountain National Park at this location. It offers pocket water fishing at its best. So grab your favorite fly fishing rod and reel, and head out to North Fork White River. Park Hours for April: 6:00am - 8:30pm. It can be tough to access the waters of the St. Vrain here, as most of it runs through steep canyon and the dense national park forest. Midges and BWOs arehatching. The two branches join at Lyons, at the mouth of the canyon. Good hatches continue to take place. 02/01/2020 The stream is runing at near anormal level. The river has the most diverse caddis population of any stream on the Front Range of Colorado, so caddis patterns work well. I hooked up a chunky eight-inch brown trout on my second cast. This is an ideal time of year to fish the St. Vrain River. I sat down and we exchanged fishing reports. The St. Vrain finds its source in the mountains west of Lyons and begins as three small tributaries which ultimately join in town. The North Fork is found on Colorado #7. There are good hatches taking place. Our customers in the park are still catching fish and several of our patterns are working. In order to minimize stress on the fish, it is better to fish in the mornings or evenings."

Robb Colorado River State Park report that "trout fishing has slowed with the warmer summer temperatures. The St. Vrain is narrow with a lot of brush along the banks, and long cast arent going to yield the same results as short casting. A good flow for the Poudre in town is anything above 15 cfs, and 10 cfs at The North Fork in Gateway Natural Area. There is a trailhead for the South Fork located on County Road 96 off highway #72. If you intend to fish it this week you will most likely land a few brown trout, but be prepared to work hard for each fish. 10/12/21 Stream levels are in good shape and the cooler weather a big help. A little north and west of Boulder, the three sections of St. Vrain Creek are rife with rainbows, browns, and cutthroats. The upper stretches are small and brushy. Keep in mind that the Middle and South St. Vrain tend to be busiest during the Spring, Summer, and Fall, so you may have to hike a bit to find a spot clear of other anglers. These are bi-brooded insects and hatch again about the middle of September through October. Fish the lower sections. The three branches of St. Vrain Creek decent from high elevations at a steep decline. These are the the top flies we sell for this river. We are getting good reports from customers again.

Big trout just dont live in small streams at higher elevations. Lake Pueblo offers some of the best walleye fishing in Colorado and is near Colorado Springs and Denver, just a short drive south on I-25 and west of Pueblo off HWY-50.
